Tobacco Control—A Smoke-Free BC for our Children

Smoking causes 85% of lung cancers, 30% of cancer deaths and kills up to 6,000 people in BC each year. Second-hand smoke takes the lives of an additional 140 British Columbians. The time has come to strengthen tobacco control measures; there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco.

What can you do?

Make your voice heard. Join the Canadian Cancer Society in calling on all political parties to make a commitment to:

 Increase Tobacco Control Measures

  • Ban the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies
  • Ban smoking on bar and restaurant patios and other outdoor public places
  • Increase tobacco taxes
  • Subsidize Nicotine Replacement Therapies

Why is this important?

Selling tobacco products in pharmacies sends the wrong message to children and undermines educational and tobacco control initiatives.

British Columbians should be protected from second-hand smoke on patios and a variety of other outdoor public places, including seating areas of sports arenas, stadiums, sports fields, parks, playgrounds, and beaches.

Tobacco taxation is the most effective public health policy in lowering tobacco use. As tobacco taxes increase, smoking rates decrease, especially among youth, whose decision to buy is particularly affected by price. Most studies conclude that a 10% increase in the price of a package of cigarettes lowers overall cigarette consumption by 3 to 5%.

Smokers need support when they are trying to quit. Nicotine Replacement Therapies and other cessation products, combined with medical counseling, are successful in treating tobacco addiction.
