British Columbia has the highest rate of childhood poverty in Canada. Now is the time to take action. The differences between the most and least healthy in this province are contributing to the burden of cancer and other chronic diseases straining the health care system. These social, economic, and environmental factors that influence health and contribute to the differences among us, need to be addressed though coordinated and meaningful policy. Start by putting the health of children first.

Reduce Health Inequities
|
Why is this important?
An all levels of government approach means that all ministries work together towards a common goal to improve the health status of all British Columbians, especially children.
ActNow BC, the Province's healthy living initiative, was created to contribute to the government's goal of being the healthiest population to host an Olympic Games. ActNow BC should continue, be implemented beyond 2010, and expand in its capacity to address health inequities.
Immediate and strategic actions are needed in the development of healthy public policy. Every ministry should examine its programs and policies to identify the role it can play in order to raise the health status of children and all British Columbians.
